- A wais list of about 210 archive sites that maintain computer science (and similar) technical reports, for public consumption. This list is regularly posted in comp.doc.techreports.
- A techreport database of titles, and authors of more than 10,000 techreports, preprints, reprints, technical notes, and papers from nearly 100 Universities and research institutes from around the world. A database which contains a list of journal article titles and authors
from approximately 600 computing journals, conference proceedings,
books, and seminars. The journals codes and full names are also in
this database, so you can find (for example) the name of the journal
with the code ACTAINF, by searching the database for 'actainf'. Both

- INRIA hypertext interface (you may want to also try this path), their keyword searchable document information center . This will give you a document title and number. Then you can ftp to ftp.inria.fr and cd to INRIA/publication/RR (it is easier to do this outside Mosaic). INRIA is a french research institute in computer-science and resides under the responsibility of the Ministry of Research and the Ministry of Industry. In its domain it has become one of the most active and advanced research laboratories in the world. INRIA's activities are spread over five research-units and one service-unit. In particular, they have an excellent computer vision research program; Ayache does his deformable model work at INRIA. see also a doc page .

- Computer Science Technical Reports are now available from a server at Cornell. The server provides a forms-based interface for searching the collection by author, title, or words in the abstract; you can also obtain lists of the full TR collection sorted by author or number. The TRs are available in a variety of forms including 600 dpi TIFF, 72dpi GIF (legible on a color monitor) and 10dpi GIF (for quick visual browsing). In some cases Postscript or other forms are available.

QUEST has constructed a 2D Gel Rat Protein Database, and the protein spot identifications are now available graphically via WWW. This database is presented in a manner which allows the user to point to and click on known protein spots to obtain their identities. You can read about their Quest II software system, and the h hyperbook language (which simplifies conversion from normal texts to HTML hypertext) which was used to create their online tutorial for the Quest II software. General Info/Search Engines
- C|net's search page - includes 250 search engines!
- Archie - a facility for finding programs on the internet. Archie lets you find which computer has a program of a given name. You must know the name of the program or a part of the name.
- WAIS searchable directory-of-servers. This is a database of databases. You search the database with keywords. It returns pointers to the relevant databases which you can then search. Unfortunately each database is only represented by relatively few keywords in the database of databases; but still an excellent way to find relevant databases. For example, search on RFC, then pick the rfcs.src server, then search it for any term to get back a list of RFCs for a topic.

- List of USENET FAQs (frequently asked questions). There is a lot of material here, it is frequently the first place I look for general information on a topic (since it will often list places you can find other relevant information). - WWWW - the World Wide Web Worm - has been crawling the web and found 100,000+ resources. WWWW provides access to the resources through sorted lists (huge!) and through a search engine. WWWW complements the Mother-of-all BBS which is accumulating organized catalogues of resources in all areas ( Add Something). The search engine allows resources to be located through keyword searches on the title strings of WWW Pages, or through the hypertext associated with objects. It also allows searching against the machine or file names. Requires Forms support (e.g. Mosaic 2.0). Examples are given that a) find all Home Pages in Finland, b) locate pages at or related to NASA and c) locate all MPEG movies on the WWW.

- The Netlink Server There are links to approximately 3600 gophers, 1900 telnet sites, 300 WWW home pages and about 600 selected others. All requests to the server are word searches, but there are a number of pre-defined searches arranged in menu structures, so it is not necessary to create a search if you don't want to. So, for example, if you wanted to find all the library catalogs in New Jersey, coded with a subject of Medicine, that became available on the Internet since 1992 you could do that.
